OpenAI, Amazon, and Google are exploring Argentina's Patagonia region as a potential hub for massive data centers, drawn by its natural cooling resources and renewable energy—but infrastructure gaps and political uncertainty pose significant challenges.

The world's leading artificial intelligence and cloud computing firms are now evaluating Argentina's Patagonia region as a location for large-scale data center operations.
Spanning 17,300 glaciers across its Northern and Southern ice fields, Patagonia presents a compelling case for hyperscale infrastructure investment. The region's frigid temperatures naturally reduce cooling expenses for data centers, while its diverse energy portfolio—including hydroelectric, wind, shale gas, and solar capacity—offers operators multiple pathways to power their facilities. According to Reuters reporting, these advantages have captured the attention of major players including Amazon, Google, and OpenAI. Yet realizing this potential requires substantial infrastructure development, particularly in high-speed fiber connectivity, alongside navigating an uncertain political landscape with a presidential election scheduled for next year.
Natural Advantages and Energy Resources
Patagonia's geographic and climatic characteristics offer distinct operational benefits. The perpetually cold environment enables data centers to maintain optimal operating temperatures while consuming significantly less electricity for cooling systems. The region's extensive glacier coverage underscores its naturally cool conditions, a major advantage in an industry where thermal management drives operational costs.
Energy availability represents another critical draw. The region supports multiple renewable and conventional power generation methods, providing operators with flexibility in sourcing electricity for their facilities.
Political Climate and Investment Momentum
Argentina's current political environment appears receptive to major technology investments. President Javier Milei has undertaken measures designed to attract Big Tech companies to the country. Public sentiment toward data center development remains largely neutral, with no organized opposition campaigns or significant backlash reported at this stage. This contrasts with resistance movements in other regions and creates a favorable near-term backdrop for project development.
However, political risk looms. A presidential election next year could substantially alter the investment climate, introducing uncertainty for operators planning long-term, capital-intensive projects. Additionally, certain areas within Patagonia involve indigenous communities whose interests and land rights may complicate expansion plans, creating additional complexity for developers.
Projects in Development
Several major initiatives are already underway or announced. OpenAI has confirmed plans for a $25 billion data center with 500MW of clean energy capacity in Argentina. Poland-based Green Capital is developing a $3 billion facility capable of 300MW of power consumption in Patagonia. FlexDomes, a U.S.-based green data center operator, is launching the initial phase of a 120MW installation. These projects signal serious commitment from both established and emerging players in the sector.
The activity in Patagonia reflects broader expansion strategies across South America, where Amazon, Google, and comparable firms are actively scouting additional locations for growth.
Infrastructure Challenges

Despite its attractions, Patagonia faces structural limitations that developers must address. Connectivity infrastructure remains underdeveloped, and the electrical grid requires upgrades to support large-scale data center operations. Similar projects elsewhere have tackled comparable deficiencies on a case-by-case basis, often with government support, but such solutions typically increase project costs substantially. These infrastructure gaps represent a significant hurdle that must be overcome before the region can fully realize its potential as a data center destination.
