Steam hits record $1.7 billion in September 2026 despite soaring PC hardware costs — platform approaches 21,000 new releases in 2026, on track to top $20 billion annually

The PC gaming market is demonstrating resilience even as hardware expenses climb, with Steam's September 2026 performance underscoring the sector's momentum. Alinea Analytics reports that the platform earned an estimated $1.7 billion last month, marking its best September on record and representing a 13% increase from September 2025's previous high. The third quarter of 2026 also set a record, bringing in $5.5 billion—up 12% from the same quarter in 2025. Through the first nine months of 2026, Steam has accumulated $16.5 billion in revenue, compared with $14.5 billion during the equivalent 2025 period.

New intellectual property released in 2026 captured 20.5% of revenue among Steam's 500 highest-grossing titles in September, while established franchises dominated with 79.5% of the total, including 3.8% from remakes and remasters. Several blockbuster launches fueled the month's strong showing. Wardogs, which entered early access on September 10, generated approximately $86.9 million. Onimusha: Way of the Sword brought in $30.4 million, and The Blood of Dawnwalker contributed $26.9 million.

Free-to-play titles remain a significant revenue driver for the platform. Counter-Strike 2, Apex Legends, PUBG, and Dota 2 collectively generated nearly $168 million in September alone—roughly 10% of Steam's estimated monthly total.

Steam is approaching another milestone in its annual release count. As of October 1, the platform hosted 20,220 game releases for 2026. With 1,156 additional titles scheduled to launch during October, Steam is positioned to surpass the 21,268 games released in 2025 if those launches proceed as planned.

The data suggests that elevated PC gaming hardware costs have not yet dampened consumer spending on games themselves. Alinea projects that with a robust release calendar ahead, Steam could reach $20 billion in annual revenue for the first time.

Beyond traditional desktop and laptop gaming, Steam's reach extends to other form factors. Valve's Steam Deck handheld device grants players portable access to their Steam libraries, while the newly launched Steam Machine brings the platform into living rooms. The company continues expanding Steam OS, its gaming-oriented operating system, to additional hardware.
