AMD Buys World Labs for $8.2 Billion to Challenge Nvidia in AI Models

AMD and World Labs have announced an acquisition agreement under which the chipmaker will take over the artificial intelligence company by year-end, contingent on regulatory clearance. The deal carries a valuation of $8.2 billion.

World Labs was established in 2024 by computer vision scientist Fei-Fei Li alongside researchers Justin Johnson, Christoph Lassner, and Ben Mildenhall. The startup secured $230 million in initial funding, with AMD among its backers.

The company has focused on developing world models—artificial intelligence systems designed to simulate and predict behavior in the physical world. Multiple competing approaches exist in this emerging field, though many rely on training using extensive video datasets.

Marble represents World Labs' first tool available to the public. This system creates small three-dimensional environments using Gaussian splats, which developers can then extract as three-dimensional assets for use in filmmaking, video game creation, and similar fields. The startup has since released additional models and tools tailored to different applications, including Atlas.

Synthetic data generation for robot training stands out as a major application driving substantial investment in world models. This domain represents an area where Nvidia, AMD's primary competitor, maintains a significant advantage. While AMD has previously released its own world model research, including the open-source Micro-World, it has lacked a comprehensive offering comparable to Nvidia's Cosmos platform and associated tools.

Beyond acquiring World Labs' technology, the deal brings prominent researchers into AMD's organization. According to World Labs' announcement, Fei-Fei Li will assume the role of Executive Vice President and Chief Scientist at AMD. The statement also notes that "Justin Johnson and Ben Mildenhall will work with Fei-Fei to continue leading the World Labs team as it joins AMD to form a world-leading frontier research organization."

While World Labs initially gained attention for content creation applications—Marble received considerable discussion at this year's SIGGRAPH conference for computer graphics professionals—AMD's public messaging around the acquisition emphasizes robotics applications. The company stated: "As AI expands into reasoning, robotics, simulation and physical AI, the demands on compute infrastructure become more diverse. World Labs' expertise in developing advanced models will give AMD deeper insight into how workloads are evolving and help shape its future technology roadmaps."

The acquisition occurs faster than typical for a startup at World Labs' stage, yet AMD's move aligns with its prior relationship with the company. As Nvidia maintains commanding market position in AI chips, AMD requires the kind of specialized knowledge that this acquisition provides.
