Amazon promises to spend $1 billion on communities close to its data centers, but critics push back

Skeptics have characterized Amazon's latest community investment as a calculated move to secure local approval for data center expansion rather than genuine philanthropic commitment.

The tech giant unveiled "Built Together," a program committing $1 billion in funding across five years to communities where its data centers operate. The initiative will place decision-making power in residents' hands regarding how to deploy the money, with potential applications spanning projects designed to lower electricity consumption costs.

With Built Together, Amazon will add more than $1 billion over the next five years to what we're already doing — with communities in the driver's seat to determine what's most useful for them across education, job training, energy affordability, water and energy preservation, and local priorities.

AWS CEO Matt Garman

Garman outlined three priority areas that the company believes matter most to residents in data center host communities: educational advancement and job preparation pathways, making energy and water solutions more affordable for households, and discretionary funding that allows communities to address their own specific needs while maintaining local control over resource allocation.
