Managed Services From Hardware Partners Become Critical to Neocloud Success

As specialized AI cloud providers compete with hyperscalers, integrated support from vendors like Dell is increasingly determining whether smaller operators can keep their GPU clusters profitable and performing at scale.

Managed services support keeps neocloud GPU capacity healthy

The proliferation of neocloud operators seeking dedicated GPU capacity has created a new challenge: launching a cluster is merely the beginning. Smaller providers are discovering that sustained profitability and operational health depend heavily on managed services partnerships with hardware vendors.

Specialized AI infrastructure providers are establishing themselves as alternatives to hyperscalers, particularly in markets where data sovereignty requirements dictate geographic location and operational control. According to Tom Richer, executive vice president of Alpha Compute Corp, startups cannot independently manage every component of a complex GPU deployment.

You can cobble together a lot of different providers, but then when stuff goes wrong, the finger-pointing starts. You just want that integrated solution provider who can ensure success, help you with all of the build-out, then all of the … managed services to keep it going healthy and to keep everything performing in line with [service-level agreements].

Managed services support anchors a sovereign neocloud

Alpha Compute entered AI infrastructure less than a year after its founding in digital assets, now positioning itself around sovereign and confidential computing built on Dell Technologies Inc. and Intel Corp. platforms. The company's strategy, termed sovereign by design, begins at the silicon level and maintains data residency within customer jurisdictions to comply with regulations including the EU AI Act and the General Data Protection Regulation.

We start with the hardware. Think of a stack. All the way down to the chip level, we are creating enclaves. We're a Dell partner, so we use Dell technology as well as Intel technology.

Tom Richer

The company's infrastructure stack is currently operational in production. A 72-node cluster in St. Louis combines Nvidia Blackwell systems sourced through Dell with InfiniBand connectivity and direct liquid cooling housed in a converted brownfield facility. Alpha Compute has disclosed plans for additional Blackwell deployments and announced a binding term sheet for a $31.9 million nonrecourse loan facility backed by Nvidia B300 hardware.

There's kind of a trinity there, though. You need the off-taker, a good off-taker. But also you need that kind of land, power [and] shell.

Tom Richer

Following cluster deployment, Alpha Compute retains direct customer relationships, with support tickets, problem resolution and hardware logistics managed through a collaborative team structure with Dell. The vendor has made AI factories a cornerstone of its enterprise strategy. Current Alpha Compute customers are AI research organizations that prefer the provider managing all infrastructure below the operating system layer, though enterprise clients may require broader support.

With Dell as our managed services partner, we can go above the [operating system] on day two. The powerful thing with Dell and their integrated approach is we can go to any level.

Tom Richer

The scope of managed services partnerships also influences how Richer assesses neocloud market positioning. Rather than displacing public cloud entirely, purpose-built providers offering isolation from "noisy neighbors" and avoiding multitenant resource contention will capture the most demanding and sensitive GPU workloads.

I really see neoclouds now accompanying and fusing with public cloud for enterprise choices in that hybrid manner. For those superintelligence workloads that are really demanding, enterprises can send those sensitive, intense high-performance computing workloads over to the neocloud, so they can work in concert.
