Google's Pixel 4a Battery Fix Creates More Questions Than Answers
An automatic update to some Pixel 4a phones has slashed battery life dramatically, leaving owners confused about what went wrong and frustrated with limited compensation options.

Google has remained silent on the underlying cause of battery problems affecting certain Pixel 4a devices. Following an unusual update rolled out to end-of-life phones, numerous owners now report severely diminished battery performance, yet they have limited recourse and no way to restore their devices to their previous state.
Announced in early January, the Pixel 4a Battery Performance Program notified affected users that an automatic update would degrade their battery's runtime and charging capabilities for some "Impacted Devices." The company offered three remedies available within a one-year window: battery replacement through mail-in service, a $50 payment, or $100 in Google Store credit toward a new Pixel phone purchase. The support documentation made no mention of safety concerns or hazard risks.

Decoding the kernel
Google provided no explanation for why only certain handsets were targeted, but Hector Martin—known for work on Asahi Linux, open source Kinect drivers, and other projects—examined the update's binary kernel and identified several noteworthy findings.
Martin's analysis of the updated Pixel 4a kernel reveals these characteristics:
- The kernel appears to have been compiled by a Google engineer using a personal machine rather than the standard buildsystem
- Source code is absent, which would typically be required for a Linux kernel build, though it may only need to be provided upon request under the GNU General Public License
- Maximum charge voltage for specific battery profiles dropped from 4.44 volts to 3.95 volts, preventing batteries from reaching their original charge capacity
- Two distinct battery profiles exist, marked with "ATL" and "LSN" designations; Martin believes these correspond to Amperex Technology Limited and Lishen, both battery cell manufacturers
- LSN-tagged batteries assigned the "debug" profile experience capacity reduction from 3,080 milliamp hours (mAh) to 1,539 mAh
Severely limited runtime

A Silicon Ledger staff member who still used a Pixel 4a installed the update and witnessed battery endurance plummet from functional performance to approximately two hours per charge. This person had already selected the Google Store credit option before the update arrived and before the battery degradation became apparent. Once an appeasement option was chosen, switching to a different one became impossible.
Numerous other users have reported nearly unusable battery performance, with complaints visible across Reddit discussions and technology blogs.
Even technically proficient Pixel owners struggle to circumvent the update. According to a wiki documenting the Pixel 4a battery program maintained by repair advocate and YouTube creator Louis Rossman, and confirmed by Pixel 4a owners on Reddit and by Silicon Ledger staff, Google processes the $50 payment through financial services vendor Payoneer.
Opening a Payoneer account requires submitting a Social Security number or equivalent identification, date of birth, and bank account information to a financial services company unfamiliar to most individual users. Payoneer charges a $30 annual fee for accounts receiving less than $2,000 within a 12-month period. Pixel 4a owners must apparently manage closing their Payoneer accounts after receiving their credits.

The $100 Google Store credit option appears more attractive but carries its own limitation. The discount applies exclusively to Pixel phones and only to models not currently discounted elsewhere.
The unanswered question
Many Pixel 4a batteries are now four to five years old. Some remain in secondary or rarely-used phones, and numerous units already operate at reduced capacity, particularly when charge levels drop or temperatures fall. If Google had issued a final battery-focused update to all aging Pixel devices to prevent unexpected shutdowns—similar to Apple's previously undisclosed iPhone performance management—the reaction might be less severe. However, Google has not disclosed why specific Pixel 4a phones qualify as "Impacted Devices" while others do not, nor has it explained what issue is significant enough to warrant an automatic update to a 2020-era phone that essentially destroys its battery performance.
No public reports or community discussions have documented Pixel 4a devices catching fire or failing to operate after four years. The update represents a forceful intervention with dramatic consequences, yet its purpose remains unclear. Google's support documentation only states the update will "improve the stability of their battery's performance." Technically, this claim holds true: a severely throttled Pixel 4a battery will indeed provide consistent output—zero—indefinitely.
Google support representatives have informed multiple Pixel 4a owners that additional future updates could trigger a factory reset and automatic installation. This has not materialized within the timeframes support staff mentioned.
