During the nineteenth century, astronomers encountered a puzzle: certain stars emitted spectral lines unlike anything they had seen before. The mystery persisted until 1868, when helium was identified as a chemical element. This breakthrough allowed researchers to finally account for the unusual broad emission bands appearing in these stellar spectra.

These objects eventually received their name from French astronomers Charles Wolf and Georges Rayet, who contributed to their study. Scientists determined that Wolf-Rayet stars occupy the centers of planetary nebulae and continuously expel material into space at tremendous speeds, creating their characteristic visual signature.

Photographer Chris McGrew recently captured an image of WR 134, a variable Wolf-Rayet star positioned approximately 6,000 light-years from Earth within the constellation Cygnus. The photograph was taken from a dark-sky location in southwestern New Mexico and showcases the star's most striking feature.

The stellar winds are blowing out the blue shell of ionized oxygen gas visible in the middle of the image. This is a deep sky object that has been imaged countless times, and I get why. Ever since I saw it for the first time, it's been high on my list. For years I didn't have the skies or the time, but I finally got the chance to go after it.
