Apple Rolls Out System Updates Across Lineup, Adds Intelligence Features to Vision Pro
Apple has released a coordinated wave of operating system updates bringing new capabilities to iPhones, iPads, Macs, Apple TVs, and its Vision Pro headset.
In a broad software push, Apple made available iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, macOS 15.4, tvOS 18.4, and visionOS 2.4 to users today. Each release introduces a modest set of new capabilities tailored to its platform. A watchOS 11.4 update appeared briefly but has since been pulled from availability.
iPhone and iPad Enhancements
Devices running iOS and iPadOS 18.4 that are compatible with Apple Intelligence gain Priority Notifications as the centerpiece feature. This capability works to filter out routine alerts and surface those that demand immediate attention or carry higher importance. The release also includes the fresh emoji set from Unicode 16.0, introduces a dedicated application for controlling a Vision Pro unit (mirroring the Apple Watch companion app model), and incorporates various stability improvements and minor refinements.
Mac Updates
macOS Sequoia 15.4 delivers two significant additions to the Mac ecosystem. The Mail application now offers users the ability to enable intelligent inbox organization, a feature Apple previously rolled out to iPhone and iPad users. This capability leverages Apple Intelligence language processing to help manage overflowing mailboxes.
Additionally, Macs receive Quick Start, a setup mechanism that has existed on Apple Watch, Apple TV, iPhone, and iPad devices. The feature allows users to initialize a new device and log into their Apple ID by positioning a compatible Apple device nearby. While the Mac now supports this functionality in version 15.4, the implementation differs from other platforms—it cannot work between two Macs, as the process requires a rear-facing camera.
Apple Intelligence features on the Mac, including the Mail enhancements, will not function on Intel-based Macs. The availability of Quick Start on Intel hardware remains unclear. The Mac version of Apple Intelligence continues to lag behind its iPhone counterpart by one or two update cycles, with Priority Notifications notably absent from the macOS 15.4 release.
Vision Pro Gets Apple Intelligence
The visionOS 2.4 update marks the arrival of Apple Intelligence capabilities on the Vision Pro headset. Although the device has always contained the necessary hardware—an Apple M2 chip—to run these features, they were not included in the initial rollout to iPhones, iPads, and Macs. With this update, Vision Pro becomes the fourth Apple platform to support generative AI tools including Genmoji, Image Playgrounds, Writing Tools, and notification summaries. The release also introduces a Spatial Gallery application designed to showcase a curated collection of sample spatial images, useful for demonstrations.
