New 'DLSS Unlocked' mod bundles DLSS 5 and frame generation for older Nvidia GPUs
A community-created tool combines existing mods to bring Nvidia's latest upscaling and frame-generation tech to RTX 20, 30, and 40-series cards, leveraging AMD's FSR 3.1 for older hardware.
Nvidia's artificial hardware restrictions are falling away. Community developers have released multiple modifications that unlock DLSS 5 on legacy Nvidia graphics processors, including AMD's RDNA 4 lineup. Nvidia's multi-frame generation feature has similarly been adapted for earlier GPU generations. Tracking these separate projects has become unwieldy, prompting ShyVox to create "DLSS Unlocked," a unified mod that merges OptiScaler_DLSSNR with DLSS Enabler to deliver both DLSS 5 and DLSS MFG across all RTX architectures: Turing, Ampere, and Ada.
The tool functions as a comprehensive solution for users with RTX 20-, RTX 30-, and RTX 40-series cards who want access to Nvidia's newest features on Windows and Linux systems. Rather than requiring separate installations, DLSS Unlocked consolidates two independently developed modifications into a single, streamlined package. Installation involves downloading the executable from GitHub or Nexus Mods and pointing it toward the game's root directory.

Several prerequisites must be met for the mod to function. Games must run on the DirectX 12 API and already include native support for both DLSS upscaling and frame generation. Additionally, users must supply their own patched DLSS 5 DLL file due to legal constraints. The two underlying mods operate differently from one another. OptiScaler_DLSSNR applies a straightforward approach by layering neural rendering atop OptiScaler, whereas DLSS Enabler employs a more intricate methodology.
On RTX 20- and RTX 30-series hardware, AMD's FSR 3.1 handles frame interpolation instead of Nvidia's native system. For RTX 40-series cards, DLSS-G produces the second frame through conventional frame generation, while FSR 3.1 manages the remaining frames to achieve up to 6X multi-frame generation. This hybrid approach relies on an additional modification called DLSSG to FSR3. The interconnected nature of these various tweaks demonstrates how rapidly the modding landscape has become intricate.

DLSS Unlocked differs fundamentally from DLSS 5 Swapper, which injects DLSS 5 into any game via ReShade using RenoDX. DLSS Unlocked requires that games already feature DLSS 2/3 upscaling capabilities before the mod can patch them to DLSS 5 and activate frame generation. This dependency stems from how OptiScaler_DLSSNR functions, which forms the foundation of DLSS Unlocked.
Users should avoid deploying these modifications in multiplayer titles, as anti-cheat systems may identify them as malicious software and issue bans. Once DLSS Unlocked is active, compatible games gain DLSS 5 neural rendering alongside frame interpolation reaching up to 4X. This capability addresses a significant concern: DLSS 5 demands substantial computational resources, with reports suggesting it can even damage RTX 5090 processors.
