Free Vintage Emulator Studio brings 44 classic synths to your DAW with chip-level precision
Autodafe's new plugin harnesses MAME's component-level emulation to recreate legendary drum machines and synthesizers—no commercial license required, though you'll need to supply your own ROM files.

Synthesizer enthusiasts now have access to a powerful new tool at no cost. Autodafe has unveiled the Vintage Emulator Studio (VES), a plugin that bundles the open-source MAME emulator's synthesizer cores into a single, unified interface.
The collection spans 44 machines with full component-level emulation, including the Akai MPC3000, LinnDrum, Oberheim DMX, and Roland TR-707—gear that shaped records by Dr. Dre, New Order, The Police, INXS, and Prince, among countless other major artists.
What distinguishes VES from competing synthesizer plugins is its architectural approach. Rather than approximating the final sound or blending component and output-stage modeling, the tool leverages MAME to simulate every processor, tone generator, envelope generator, filter chip, and converter at the component level. This methodology can yield emulations that closely mirror the original hardware's behavior, contingent on how mature each driver core is within MAME.
On machines where MAME's emulation has progressed significantly, analog and digital output stages are also recreated faithfully. This means users won't require supplementary low-pass filters or workarounds to achieve authentic hardware sonics. The interface employs a skeuomorphic design with HiDPI support, mirroring the control panels, knobs, buttons, and LCD screens of the original units. For those familiar with the hardware, navigation feels natural; for newcomers, the vintage interface design prioritizes authenticity over modern usability conventions. The plugin also encompasses floppy disk, CD-ROM, and peripheral emulation.
The Caveats
The offering does come with several limitations. Users must furnish their own ROM files and firmware, along with any sample packs specific to each synthesizer. Obtaining this data exists in a legal gray zone unless the user owns the original hardware. The computational overhead is expected to be substantial, given the intensive simulation of every component across the emulated machines.
MAME's emulation cores vary in maturity across different synthesizers. The Akai MPC-3000 driver approaches completion, while the Prophet-5 driver only recently entered MAME, meaning results will differ depending on which machine you're using. Expect periodic updates as development on the underlying MAME cores continues.

Even accounting for these constraints, the prospect of accessing fully emulated versions of even a fraction of the 44 machines represents a significant achievement. The plugin delivers output that should track remarkably closely to the original hardware, all from a single tool. The Vintage Emulator Studio is available for download in VST3 and AU formats across Windows, macOS (both Intel and M-series), and Linux, and also functions as a standalone application.
