Minecraft-Connected Crypto Thief Faces Two Decades for $245 Million Scheme
A Singapore-based member of an international cybercriminal network that targeted cryptocurrency holders now faces up to 20 years in prison for his role in one of the largest digital asset heists on record.
Their criminal enterprise generated enormous wealth, though the windfall proved short-lived. Court filings reveal that Lam made an in-person trip to the United States in 2023 to connect with fellow Minecraft players Jeandiel Serrano and Veer Chetal for the first time. His involvement with the cybercriminal organization quickly became central to its operations.
Lam, based in Singapore, took on multiple responsibilities within the scheme. He identified prosperous cryptocurrency investors as potential marks, facilitated social engineering tactics, deployed technical methods to generate account access notifications on victims' devices, and participated in converting stolen cryptocurrency into usable funds.
Members of the criminal group indulged in extravagant spending fueled by their illicit gains. Court records document the gang's acquisition of 31 high-end vehicles valued between $100,000 and $3,800,000. Their expenditures extended to single nights at exclusive nightclubs costing as much as $500,000, acquisitions of premium timepieces and designer apparel, and leases on upscale residences in major metropolitan areas including Los Angeles, the Hamptons, and Miami. The group also chartered private aircraft and maintained personal security details to accompany them.
