Developer Leverages Claude AI to Build Windows 3.1 Shell Replica in Single Hour

A developer named Mayuki has unveiled ReProgman, a recreation of the Windows 3.1 Program Manager shell that functions on current versions of Windows 11 and Apple Silicon Macs. The application takes its name from progman.exe, the original shell environment that dominated the Windows 3.1 era before being displaced by Windows 95 three decades ago.
The development process proved remarkably efficient. Mayuki enlisted Claude Code to generate the initial version, which emerged within approximately one hour and achieved a respectable level of functionality, though refinement was required to address various issues. In discussing the project's release, Mayuki noted: "I asked Claude to create a clone of the Windows 3.1 Program Manager," and added, "I think you'll enjoy reminiscing with it for about 30 seconds."
The application maintains a lightweight footprint, with release versions ranging from 12 to 16MB in size. No installation is necessary, making it straightforward to download and test without significant commitment. Operating ReProgman requires the .NET SDK 10.0 or later, and Mayuki has made the source code available on GitHub under the MIT license.
