Buyer discovers rental PC remotely disabled after Windows update
A user who purchased what they thought was a legitimate used computer discovered it was a stolen rental device when it was remotely locked by the equipment's actual owner.

A Redditor identified as u/cal93 encountered an unexpected problem after installing a Windows update on a machine they had acquired for $650 through OfferUp several months prior. The computer suddenly became inoperable after the update was downloaded, triggered by a remote mechanism activated by Fragile, the company managing NZXT's Flex subscription rental program.
Fragile intervened in the user's Reddit post to clarify that the device in question was part of their rental inventory and that the seller had no legitimate authority to transfer ownership. The company revealed the machine had been stolen from their rental fleet.
Following communication with the affected buyer, Fragile took action to resolve the situation. The user received a replacement PC at no cost, contingent on returning the stolen device to law enforcement authorities. Tom's Hardware reviewed documentation confirming the arrangement.
[update] stolen PC i was sold is now being returned to NZXT and Fragile, and they sent me a replacement!
