The AI capex numbers to compare against
Each company measures capital spending slightly differently, so treat these as company-specific baselines rather than one comparable series. All figures are from the most recent quarterly releases.
Microsoft
Additions to property and equipment were $35.8 billion in the quarter ended June 30, 2026, against $17.1 billion a year earlier. For the full fiscal year 2026 the total was $115.9 billion, up from $64.6 billion in fiscal 2025. Azure and other cloud services revenue grew 43% (Microsoft FY26 Q4 release).
Alphabet
Purchases of property and equipment were $44.9 billion in the second quarter of 2026, double the $22.4 billion of a year earlier. Google Cloud revenue growth accelerated to 82%. In June, Alphabet also raised $49.6 billion in net proceeds from an equity offering, partly to fund AI infrastructure (Alphabet Q2 2026 release).
Meta
Capital expenditures, including principal payments on finance leases, were $31.08 billion in the second quarter. Free cash flow fell to $784 million. Meta's outlook puts 2026 capex at $130–145 billion, narrowed in July from $125–145 billion (Meta Q2 2026 release).
Amazon
Purchases of property and equipment were $54.2 billion in the second quarter, up from $32.2 billion a year earlier. Over the trailing twelve months, net of proceeds and incentives, the figure was $169.0 billion, and trailing free cash flow was an outflow of $7.6 billion. AWS revenue grew 37% to $42.2 billion (Amazon Q2 2026 release).
Apple
Apple does not build AI data centers on the same scale and has not given a comparable capex outlook. Its call is mostly about iPhone demand and services, but listen for comments on how it is paying for AI features.
What to listen for on the calls
- Spending outlooks. Whether Meta keeps its $130–145 billion range, and what Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon say about spending for the rest of 2026 and for 2027.
- Cloud growth versus capacity. Whether Azure, Google Cloud and AWS growth is limited by available data center capacity rather than demand.
- Chip and memory supply. Comments on GPU, custom accelerator and memory availability. For the supplier side, see our chip earnings calendar for Q3 2026 and the explainer on why RAM prices are so high.
- Cash flow and funding. With free cash flow under pressure at Meta and Amazon, watch for debt issuance, leases and equity raises like Alphabet's.
