AMD expands FSR 4.1 upscaler to older Radeon cards, Xbox consoles, and Ryzen chips

AMD has rolled out FSR 4.1 support to Radeon RX 6000 graphics cards, Xbox Series X and S, and several Ryzen processors, bringing its advanced upscaling technology to a much broader installed base.

AMD's FSR 4.1 now works on Radeon RX 6000 cards, Xbox Series X and S, and Ryzen AI Max, AI 9, and Z2 SoCs

The company has delivered on an earlier promise to bring its FSR 4.1 upscaling technology beyond the Radeon RX 9000 lineup. Radeon executive Jack Hyunh announced today that FSR 4.1 now runs on Radeon RX 6000-series GPUs, both Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, Ryzen Z-series handheld devices, and systems equipped with Ryzen AI Max and AI 9 processors.

To achieve compatibility across this wider range of hardware, AMD modified FSR 4.1's underlying neural network to work with INT8 shader capabilities rather than the higher-precision FP8 matrix acceleration found on Radeon 9000 cards. For handheld implementations, the company reduced the footprint to under half the size of the standard version.

Compared to FSR 3, the new release promises improved image fidelity on the supported GPUs and APUs. Testing with a Radeon RX 6900 XT running Cyberpunk 2077 in FSR Balanced mode at 4K showed a performance cost of approximately 13%. The enhanced upscaling quality may allow players to use higher-performance modes than previously feasible, potentially offsetting that overhead.

Additional improvements and features

FSR Frame Generation has received refinements to frame pacing, addressing a persistent issue that should result in smoother gameplay when frame generation is active. Vulkan API support for FSR 4.1 is planned for a future release, benefiting certain games and console emulators. FSR Ray Regeneration support is expanding to additional titles, with Warhammer 40,000: Darktide now featuring the technology.

Getting the update

The Radeon 26.10.1 driver, released today, delivers these improvements and can be downloaded through the AMD Adrenalin application or directly from AMD's website. The driver also introduces support for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Star Wars: Galactic Racer, and Final Fantasy Resonance.

Xbox and Ryzen Z2 handheld owners will receive updates from their respective manufacturers, as these devices rely on OEM-specific driver implementations.
