Enough Phone launches preorders for a genuinely compact smartphone at $399
A new startup is testing whether consumers will actually buy a smaller phone, offering a 5.3-inch device with mid-range specs and a user-replaceable battery starting today on Kickstarter.

Smartphone screens have ballooned dramatically since the early days of mobile computing, when 3.5-inch displays were standard. Yet consumers frequently express frustration with the size of modern handsets. Enough Phone is wagering that this sentiment translates into actual purchasing power. The startup launches preorders today for its inaugural model, centered on a 5.3-inch screen—reportedly the smallest available that meets acceptable performance standards.
The brand's name signals its philosophy toward device design. This is not a flagship contender, but rather a phone that aims to be "enough" for typical users. The hardware includes a mid-range MediaTek processor, a single rear camera, a polycarbonate chassis, and a fingerprint reader integrated into the power button.

The compact display means the Enough Phone will appear diminutive next to virtually all current smartphones. Though slightly thicker, it occupies nearly the same physical footprint as the iPhone 13 Mini. The designers sacrificed thinness to accommodate a user-replaceable battery, which can be accessed by removing several screws from the rear panel—a design approach similar to the Fairphone.

Software flexibility is built into the offering. Buyers can select either a standard Google-certified Android 17 build, which will likely appeal to most users, or OdysseyOS, a minimalist, de-Googled Android variant that mimics dumbphone behavior and excludes a web browser entirely.
Several specifications remain undetermined. The team has not finalized waterproofing and durability certifications, and battery capacity may shift during development. The designers express hope that any changes will increase rather than decrease capacity. Carrier compatibility also remains uncertain at present. While the device will ship as an unlocked 5G phone with aspirations for "broad global support," users on restrictive networks such as Verizon may encounter compatibility issues.
A waiting game
A significant consideration involves timing. The Enough Phone campaign launches on Kickstarter today, with deliveries targeted for May 2027. Consumer sentiment about a compact phone today may not persist over six months. Kickstarter has a documented history of projects missing deadlines or failing entirely. However, the Enough Phone team notes this is not their first smartphone venture. The group has previously designed and manufactured hardware for established companies in their capacity as an original design manufacturer (ODM).

For those who have repeatedly advocated for smaller devices, this represents an opportunity to demonstrate genuine demand. Early backers can secure the Enough Phone at $399, with prices escalating to $449 and then $499 in subsequent phases. The standard retail price will be $599. For a specialized product, this pricing structure is reasonable given the steep trajectory of component expenses.
Backing the Enough Phone requires a degree of confidence in an unproven manufacturer. The company commits to software updates through 2032, a timeframe approaching what major manufacturers typically guarantee. Yet when Samsung or Google makes such a pledge, it carries substantial weight. This represents the first device Enough Phone has produced under its own brand, introducing uncertainty about execution and long-term viability.
